The construction of a nuclear plant on the moon is being considered by Russian and Chinese space officials, to power the countries' planned International Lunar Research Station (ILRS). Reuters reported that a presentation from a Chinese “senior official” confirmed plans that the ILRS base could be powered by a nuclear reactor on the moon. Back in March 2024, Reuters also reported that Roscosmos director general Yuri Borisov was planning to use nuclear power to energise the ILRS facility.

Great British Nuclear (GBN) will be seeking Owner’s Engineers (OEs) to “provide essential independent assurance” for up to two small modular reactor (SMR) designs in contracts worth hundreds of millions. The intent to procure the expertise was announced via a preliminary market engagement notice (PME Notice) and a planned procurement notice, both published on 22 April.
