“The Great Canadian Maple Syrup Heist” sounds like the punchline of a lazy joke (or the title of a bad sketch) until you learn that such a thing actually happened between 2011 and 2012 in Quebec, where more than 3,000 tons of syrup was stolen and replaced with water for a profit of nearly $20 million (Canadian dollars) before the perpetrators were caught.

Let’s get the superlatives out the way early: Whether or not a lot of people loved, or even watched, The Sympathizer, it should go down as one of HBO’s more out-there punts in the Zaslav era. The episodic structure of TV storytelling made a great template for adapting the fractured, unreliable voice of the Captain from the novel. Creators Park Chan-wook and Don McKellar, both known for their singular styles and legends in their own right, made for good collaborators.

Well, that was fast. Even for a show so eager to reconfigure and relocate itself episode by episode, it still feels like next week’s finale, and the Captain’s return to Vietnam, has suddenly snuck up on us a little, with so many dangling curiosities we for sure won’t get all the answers for. Will we ever see Lana, Sofia, or non-Claude RDJs again? It seems unlikely, some more so than others.

The first surprise in Outer Range’s second season, which kicks off May 16, is that it exists at all. The quietly competent sci-fi western debuted in 2022 without much fanfare, despite some good and intriguing first couple of episodes and a tremendous cast. This could be chalked up to Prime Video’s inability to market any of its shows that aren’t The Boys.
