(St. Paul, MN) — Minnesota businesses now have the option to use oral fluid testing to check for drugs. A new law allowing the use of the oral tests goes into effect today. Employers aren’t required to use the tests but they can provide quicker results than traditional blood or urine tests.

(Undated) — Several new Minnesota laws take effect today. One piece of legislation increases the penalty for illegal straw gun purchases. The punishment for the violation moves from a gross misdemeanor to a felony. Meanwhile, swatting incidents that consist of false emergency calls aimed at sending police to the homes of elected officials and others are rising from a gross misdemeanor to a felony.

(Bismarck, ND) — North Dakotans are paying more for car insurance these days. Between 2022 and 2023, the average auto insurance rate in North Dakota went up 18-percent, according to online insurance marketplace “The Zebra”. Insurance carriers say an increase in severe weather events and fatal accidents are both contributing factors. A rise in uninsured and distracted drivers are also playing a role in the increased rates, along with rising repair costs.

(Fargo, ND) — U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders is coming to Minnesota this weekend. The 82-year-old Vermont lawmaker will take part in a town hall tomorrow evening at Minnesota State University in Mankato. Sanders will then attend a get-out-the-vote rally at Edison High School in Minneapolis on Saturday to support Minnesota Congresswoman Ilhan Omar. Omar will face former Minneapolis City Council member Don Samuels in an August 12 Democratic primary election.

(Fargo, ND) — Steve Boyd, a republican challenger for Minnesota’s 7th congressional district says there is a complaint about republican incumbent Representative Michelle Fischbach that he is hearing from voters. “One is that lack of getting into the district, having conversations, holding town halls, being face to face, taking questions, showing up,” said Boyd. Boyd said he has participated in more than 50 town halls and other in-person events during his campaign so far.

U.S. Senators Amy Klobuchar and Tina Smith released a statement saying FEMA has approved financial aid for residents impacted by the June flooding. Affected counties include Blue Earth, Cook, Goodhue, Le Sueur, Cook, and Waseca. Residents can apply online for individual assistance at disasterassistance.gov.

(Eagan, MN) — A Minnesota health insurer has been named to a list of America’s top employers for women. Forbes magazine surveyed more than 150-thousand women working at companies with at least a thousand employees and asked how likely they were to recommend their current employer. They were also asked to rank their employer in areas like working environment, pay, parental leave and handling of accusations of sexual misconduct and discrimination.

(Minot, ND) — The general manager of the North Dakota State Fair says the fair has a year-round economic impact on the community. Craig Rudland says last year’s fair had a nine-day impact of 42-million-dollars. But the year-round impact was 80-million-dollars. Officials hope the 2024 numbers look even better. The 2025 Fair will celebrate its 60th anniversary and is scheduled next year for July 18th through the 26th.

(Fargo, ND) — A Fargo man faces multiple charges after allegedly brandishing a knife and terrorizing a woman during a domestic dispute. The victim told Fargo Police that Christopher Plentychief hit and choked her and threatened her with a knife on Monday while dumping lighter fluid around the apartment. Police evacuated the building on 42nd Street South because of concern Plentychief would start a fire.
