Surrey Police Service's Change of Command Ceremony on Tuesday, April 22 marked the symbolic handover of policing Surrey from the Surrey RCMP to the SPS almost five months after the latter was declared the city's police of jurisdiction on November 29, 2024. The invitation-only event, held at the Cloverdale Agriplex at 17673 62 Avenue, had SPS officers on parade, SPS Pipes and Drums, and the signing of the official parchment.

Travis Wayne Bowcock has lost an appeal of his March 16, 2023 conviction for attempted murder, aggravated assault and using a firearm to commit an indictable offence at a Surrey home on September 23, 2021. A jury in B.C. Supreme Court in New Westminster found Bowcock guilty of the charges after a 14-day trial during which the Crown called a lone eyewitness to the shooting who told the court the shooter was black when Bowcock is white.

I wrote this column 25 years ago about Al MacDonald, a Surrey cabbie who was shot dead in North Delta. under the same headline. His killer was recently denied parole. After Al was murdered, the endless procession of taxi cabs along King George brought tears to eyes. Rest in peace Al. I'd hear from Al MacDonald every so often.
