Archaeologist and author Clive Waddington has uncovered intriguing insights into the North East’s distant past in a long series of fascinating digs. Now the graduate of, and later lecturer in, archaeology at Newcastle University has been short-listed for the accolade of Archaeologist of the Year in the Current Archaeology magazine awards. The awards are decided by a public vote closing today. Clive has written and co-authored a dozen books and nearly 100 published academic papers.

Punk has paid off for a Northumberland fan’s years-long dedication to his music. The fan's punk parachute shirt, kept for decades after being bought in a Vivien Westwood boutique, has been sold for £3,500 by Newcastle auctioneers Anderson & Garland. The auction house describe the indigo-blue cotton shirt as “incredibly rare”. The shirt features straps and buckles, attached to a distinctive ring on the chest, as well as petrol-blue lower sleeves and a khaki cuff on only the right wrist.

For North East artist Stever Messam, there has been a double helping of New Year celebrations thousands of miles apart. On New Year’s Day, having seen in 2025 at his County Durham home, Steve flew out of Newcastle Airport for the Chinese city of Chengdu in Sichuan Province. There he has installed one of his trademark inflatable artworks between two footbridges in the city’s Tiangfu Art Park- an installation which has become part of Chengdu’s Chinese New Year events.

Research led by a North East archaeologist has uncovered evidence of a long lost residence of Harold, the last Anglo-Saxon King of England, who was killed in the Battle of Hastings in 1066. By reinterpreting previous excavations and conducting new surveys in the West Sussex coastal village of Bosham, a team from Newcastle University, together with colleagues from the University of Exeter, believe they have located a hall belonging to Harold Godwinson.
