This is a joyous occasion for the owners, Sarah and Ash, of the new restaurant and wine bar The Avenue. This has been a four-month journey for them alongside welcoming a new baby who made is appearance at the launch. Sarah was onsite instructing builders within days of delivery. This is a labour of love in all forms. Tucked into the top of Second Avenue and Queen’s Place the entrance is open and chic with an expanse of black framed glass windows upon which the company logo is emblazoned.

This is the second adaptation of Sebastian Faulks’s unforgettable novel Birdsong, adapted by Rachel Wagstaff and directed by Alastair Whatley. Faulks wrote his original novel, part of a trilogy, because he felt that the stories of the WW1 soldiers were not covered adequately in other written tomes. This production concentrates on the experiences and inner tribulations of said soldiers before, during and after their lives in the trenches.

I was invited, along with my family, ranging from 10 months to 67 years, to see ‘Beauty and the Beast’ at The Ropetackle and having seen last year’s production we were full of anticipation for a great visit. To give you some background: ‘Beauty and the Beast’ as a panto is not a Disney reproduction but emerges from a centuries-old pedigree.

The smash hit musical 101 Dalmatians is a reimagining of the 2022 Regent’s Park production, with stage adaptation from Zinnie Harris and book from the comedy/panto genius Johnny McKnight based on much loved children’s story by Dodie Smith. The lyrics and music are by Tony and Olivier Award-winner Douglas Hodge with orchestrations by Jack Hopkins. All elements and talents have been beautifully knitted together by director Bill Buckhurst.

The TOM bar is decorated for Christmas in their typical, eclectic manner – it’s delightful. When we arrive the space is deliciously quiet which heightens my excitement at seeing the latest project from the theatre company whom I consider one of the if not the best in the UK; 1927. Within minutes the room is thronged with today’s audience eager for the doors to open.
