Patrick de Marie Katoto's father himself had a career in biomedical technology and implementation of radiography technology across the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and other parts of Africa. Thus Katoto and his siblings were drawn to medical sciences. “At first as a teenager, I thought I would be an astronaut”, Katoto tells The Lancet Infectious Diseases. “But I started to spend more time going to my dad's office, and reading books on medicine”.

Carlos Andrés Ascué Tumbo, a 30-year-old Indigenous land guardian and educator, was the 115th social leader killed in Colombia this year. He served as a member of the Kiwe Thegnas (or Indigenous Guard of Cauca) and protected the communities’ forests, land and youth from illegal armed groups and coca cultivation. The Indigenous territory and land surrounding it has become a hub for drug trafficking causing deforestation and land degradation.

This could easily be (and may yet become) a Netflix drama as well as appearing here in The Lancet Respiratory Medicine. In December, 2018, Alin Gragossian, a young emergency medicine resident at Drexel University, Philadelphia, PA, USA, was out partying with her friends, many of them other trainee doctors, and looking forward to Christmas. Fast forward barely more than a month, to late January, 2019, and she was waking up having had an urgent heart transplant.

Growing up outside Cusco, Peru, in 'the Sacred Valley of the Incas’, Theresa Ochoa was blessed with intelligent, outward looking parents (her American mother was in the US Peace Corps), but she found her own way to a love of biology, and then to study medicine. She moved to the capital Lima and studied at one of the few schools of medicine in Peru (Alberto Hurtado School of Medicine, Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia) where she also completed her paediatrics residency.

In our cohort, monkeypox caused genital, perianal, and oral lesions and complications including proctitis and tonsillitis. Because of the variability of presentations, clinicians should have a low threshold for suspicion of monkeypox. Lesion swabs showed the highest viral loads, which, combined with the history of sexual exposure and the distribution of lesions, suggests close contact is probably the dominant transmission route in the current outbreak.

In the summer of 2019, Claire (name changed for confidentiality) began to feel unwell. “I felt exhausted all the time”, she explains. “But when I went to my family doctor on two different occasions, I was told fatigue was a complex issue and not given any diagnosis.”Claire was born and grew up in North London, UK, the youngest of three children, and had a normal family and school life, later attending a leading London university to study history.
