Patrick de Marie Katoto's father himself had a career in biomedical technology and implementation of radiography technology across the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and other parts of Africa. Thus Katoto and his siblings were drawn to medical sciences. “At first as a teenager, I thought I would be an astronaut”, Katoto tells The Lancet Infectious Diseases. “But I started to spend more time going to my dad's office, and reading books on medicine”.

Carlos Andrés Ascué Tumbo, a 30-year-old Indigenous land guardian and educator, was the 115th social leader killed in Colombia this year. He served as a member of the Kiwe Thegnas (or Indigenous Guard of Cauca) and protected the communities’ forests, land and youth from illegal armed groups and coca cultivation. The Indigenous territory and land surrounding it has become a hub for drug trafficking causing deforestation and land degradation.
