It’s a trend that’s been building for a few years now. Books by predominantly Black authors are being banned around the country. School curricula have been amended to skip the history lesson on slavery and racism. Critical Race Theory (CRT) — and anything that vaguely looks like it — is under attack. And the concept of “wokeness” has been misconstrued and weaponized. Fast-forward to February 2025 and there’s been a doubling down on these attempts to erase Black history.

In September 2020, I interviewed former NFL linebacker Emmanuel Acho for The Council’s annual Insurance Leadership Forum, which was held virtually that year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Acho had just started his YouTube channel, “Uncomfortable Conversations with a Black Man” (now renamed “Uncomfortable Conversations with Emmanuel Acho”), and The Council invited him to share with the conference what he was learning.

When Republican President Gerald Ford officially recognized Black History Month in 1976, he called on Americans to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans.”He also acknowledged that Black Americans had shown “courage and perseverance” when our country had failed to live up to its own ideals. Today, even Ford’s simple words would be inadmissible in many American classrooms.
