High rate of speedThomas G. Park, 21, of Butte was arrested Saturday for driving under the influence and criminal endangerment. According to the police report, an officer out on patrol at 7:30 p.m. saw a man in a red Buick driving at a high rate of speed on Continental Drive. He allegedly was going 63 miles per hour in a 35-mph zone. Park reportedly tried to elude the officer, who lost sight of the vehicle when the Buick entered a residential area, and the officer had to slow down.

The last time St. Patrick’s Day fell on a Monday was in 2014. It was cold and wet, with blowing snow and a daytime high of 39. The less-than-balmy temperatures might have kept many people indoors and for the most part, those out celebrating behaving themselves. “We haven’t had any real issues at all,” said Butte-Silver Bow County Sheriff Ed Lester in an interview 11 years ago. The long-time sheriff hopes that statement holds true once again.

Be sure to wear purple and green on Sunday as another beloved Butte tradition is St. Urho’s Day, which, without fail, falls one day prior to St. Patrick’s Day. The legendary St. Urho, who “bravely” rid Finland of its grasshoppers and saved all those tasty grapes, was a fictional character believed to have been conjured up sometime in the 1950s, just not in Finland, but in Minnesota.

The band has been part of Butte and Anaconda’s St. Patrick’s Day festivities since 1987, and their legacy continues this year, as their busy schedule begins at 5 p.m. Sunday and ends Monday evening, with several stops along the road.
