OAKMONT, Pa. (AP) — The pounding rain arrived far too late to douse so many of the meltdowns across Oakmont on Friday in a U.S. Open that produced a brilliant round by Sam Burns and a litany of collapses and tantrums typical in a major that prides itself on being the toughest test. Only three players remained under par. Still to come are two more rounds on an Oakmont course that ruined good scores with remarkable swiftness on a day when rounds took nearly six hours to complete.

Obviously, it’s a bad day when someone attacks someone with a machete, but is it made a little better when the attacker takes them to the hospital? An Osceola County Sheriff’s Deputy was hailed down by a woman who said her brother had been assaulted by a man with a machete…who then reportedly took the victim to get medical attention. Angel Ramos-Arce reportedly got into a “verbal altercation” with the victim and allegedly decided to settle things with the blade.

Jonathan Mason, 40, was already banned from the Big Apple Grill and Bar in Murray, Kentucky. On Friday, police say he sneaked in anyway, set a live raccoon loose, and left. The animal bit a patron, and officers soon stopped Mason’s car. He refused to roll down the window, so they pulled him out and arrested him. Mason now faces charges that include second-degree assault, trespassing, resisting arrest, and driving without insurance.

The time to run from an accident is before the police are inside your vehicle. After a Sunday afternoon wreck on Colfax Avenue, Denver officers found a man slumped over in a running GMC Yukon. One officer climbed in to shut off the engine and help him. The driver suddenly woke up, threw the SUV in gear, and sped away with the officer trapped beside him. Police pulled a precision move a few blocks later, nudging the Yukon into a light pole and ending the chase. The suspect was arrested on the spot.

Earlier this week, a good Samaritan in Lumberton, Texas, rescued a 21-month-old baby after his car seat flew out of a vehicle during a turn at a busy intersection. The incident happened when the child’s mother was making a left turn, the rear passenger door swung open, and the unsecured car seat with the baby fell onto the road. According to Police Chief Danny Sullins, the baby was not properly secured, nor were two other young children in the vehicle.
