Americans living with HIV who maintain an undetectable viral load can no longer be barred from enlisting in the U.S. armed forces, a federal judge ruled in August, striking down the last remaining policy limiting enlistment for those with HIV. The ruling came in Wilkins v. Austin, which was filed against the Department of Defense November 2022 by the LGBTQ advocacy group Lambda Legal; Peter Perkowski, Esq.; Scott A. Schoettes, Esq.; and Winston & Strawn LLP.

Now, he is applying his successful long-term approach to business toward a new challenge: curing HIV. Ragon and his wife, Susan, have donated about $400 million to HIV cure research.

The federal government is, for the first time, funding a pilot program that will provide generic pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) medications to prevent HIV. Specifically, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has made about $10 million available for PrEP programs in jurisdictions already receiving funding for the Ending the HIV Epidemic in the United States initiative.

As the possible repercussions come into focus, leaders of HIV organizations have been speaking out, not just for those affected by HIV and AIDS but also for the civil rights and access to health care for African Americans, Latinos, LGBTQ people and other minorities.

Fierce poses were struck and HIV advocates were honored at Hyacinth AIDS Foundation’s 39th gala and silent auction November 2 at the Newark Museum of Art in New Jersey. Hyacinth has been providing HIV services and advocacy in the Garden State since 1985 and currently operates in seven regional offices. The evening of celebration and dance also honored individuals making a difference and inspiring others.
