The following is a press release from The Mule Deer Foundation. The Mule Deer Foundation (MDF) today announced significant strides in expanding its conservation work on black-tailed deer and their habitat. MDF has dedicated thousands of man-hours, funding, and conservation work to both Columbia black-tailed deer and Sitka black-tailed deer. In 2022, MDF hosted a Black-tailed Deer Summit to evaluate current conservation efforts for the species.

Under clear blue skies, eight volunteers from across the Evergreen State exit their vehicles on the border between ranch and public lands. The low winter sun paints highlights in the sage and snow-covered steppe. While the weather may not be ideal for all forms of hunting, it is almost perfect for spotting grouse.

We were moving here to enjoy the public lands and waters. I didn’t grow up hunting, and when I moved to Montana, I had only hunted once but never filled a single tag…ever…anywhere. As I left the military, I was also looking for an opportunity to continue to serve and give back.

All,During the Break between the Holidays BHA's Armed Forces Initiative elected a few new members to the Board who will be managing the AFI program for 2024. Please read a bit about the new board members and feel free to reach out with any questions. Moving from Colorado to upstate New York to Arizona throughout his childhood, joining the Navy to see the world just seemed to be the natural thing for Shawn to do. He served as a Submarine Torpedoman, retiring in 2018 after a 24-year career.
