Australia's eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant has made several recommendations to the Minister for Communications, Anika Wells, regarding the draft rules that will guide the upcoming ban on social media for kids under 16. Those rules are required to be formalised ahead of the ban's introduction at the end of this year, primarily so that the platforms themselves can gear up for the changes, along with the parents and kids who will be impacted.

The exemption for YouTube from the Social Media Ban for kids under 16 has been called into question by Australia’s eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant in advice provided to the Minister responsible for the legislation. Commissioner Inman Grant’s advice on the draft rules that are required to be put in place alongside the already passed legislation covers 17 pages and includes five core options for the Minister to consider.

We’re flying as fast as time travels around the clock toward the ban on social media for kids under 16 and there are still a lot – a real lot – of unanswered questions. The most important one – will YouTube be included or excluded from the ban. In short, the draft plan has YouTube exempt because of it’s educational content. My own analysis of YouTube Shorts (what we should really be talking about) vs TikTok painted YouTube in a very poor light. And there’s plenty that agree.

Meta has announced the next generation of their smart glasses in a new collaboration with Oakley to take their Sunglass based AI Voice and Camera technology to a whole new audience. This all comes about through Meta’s partnership with Luxottica, the company that owns both the Ray-Ban and Oakley brands. Ray Ban is known for style, with Oakley capturing a sport and culture market so this expansion takes the Meta glasses technology to an audience beyond the millions already sold.
