I remember the very first time I was at the perfect place and time to see kittens being born. My family was living in Reno in the mid 1960s. I was but a wee one, maybe 10. In the 1950s the push was to have a bomb shelter in every basement in the country. The Rooshkies (Russians) were what our nightmares were all about at the time. So, my family had a dug out thick cement walled spot in our basement.

I just watched a show where the family had a chest-type freezer. The reason they had a chest freezer was that the dad was a hired hit man, and he kept his “hits” in the bottom of the family freezer. Yes, under the rocky road ice cream. That is why I will always have an upright freezer. Well, that isn’t the only reason. But. Yes, a freezer "but.” That is a good reason to not have a chest freezer. No surprises on the bottom. Here’s one for you. Try saying "burnt but," three times fast! Just saying.

There was a time when I saw my 270-pound husband, a very big man, flat footed jump up on top of a 55-gallon barrel. It was something he had done since he was a teenager. I saw him do it when he was nearing 50. There was a time when I could do a running jump and get over the corral fences without even thinking about it. Fences that are about 4½ feet tall. It was easier to clear the fence than to walk to the gate. Besides, that flying part was just so freeing. Now?
