Five of the 26 people who staff the Great Basin National Park were terminated in the across-the-board cuts to the federal workforce in the first month of President Donald Trump’s attempt to get spending under control. The park is a treasure. I remember when I first saw it. It wasn’t a national park then. The beauty of the area is stunning enough, but, of course, the caves were absolutely jaw-dropping.

For many years the Las Vegas Review-Journal, the largest newspaper in Nevada, had locked horns with Sen. Harry Reid as he rose from an obscure member of the House of Representatives to the U.S. Senate and finally to become the Senate Majority Leader. As the publisher of the newspaper during that time, I interacted with Sen. Reid on many occasions. He wanted the newspaper to see things his way and to give him more credit for his rise to power.

In the 1950s Nevada was known for its “quickie” divorces, which were not all that quick back in the day, but quicker than other states. Now, Nevada has developed a cottage industry around weddings. There are stand-alone chapels that offer a myriad of packages. Every major resort has a wedding feature which, more likely than not, includes an Elvis impersonator. Of course, I’m not breaking any new ground when I tell you this.
Unions don’t work anymore

The American union movement fought slavery with Abraham Lincoln and sweat shops alongside Mary Harris “Mother” Jones back in the day. Unions were great … in the 1880s. Today unions don’t work. Federal and state employment laws protect workers, making the union proposition – for employers competing for the best work force and employees seeking out the best companies – useful as teats on a boar. Sorry. I know it’s considered uncool to question unions given the important early history.

America’s Left wants one thing from newspapers: Complete and total obedience. Consider Dan Pfeiffer. I talked with him once during Barack Obama’s first campaign in Nevada. Seemed like a smart dude. But, like a lot of politicos who gain some election success, they start sipping their own bathwater and come to believe they’re doing the Lord’s work worthy of worship by all. Mr. Pfeiffer recently chided the New York Times for failing to sufficiently get with the program to defeat Donald Trump.
