For the first time in the event’s history, the Rodanthe Fishing Pier will host the annual Disabled Veteran/Wounded Warrior Fishing Jamboree on May 10, thanks to a collaboration with a pair of veterans who have been organizing similar fishing events for years. Dave Goodman and John McAllister are residents of Hertford, N.C., and are members of the Bear Swamp/Beech Springs Ruritans, a civic service club that has branches all across the United States.

The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality’s Division of Marine Fisheries will begin renewing commercial fishing, seafood dealer and for-hire licenses and permits on April 15, and the Division is asking fishermen go ahead and get this business done in April or May. Those who renew in these months may find reduced wait times, as opposed to those who wait until late June. Another way to avoid long lines is to renew by mail or drop-box or schedule an appointment for April or May.

The N.C. Department of Environmental Quality’s Division of Marine Fisheries has extended the Spotted Seatrout cold stun harvest closure through June 30, in accordance with the state’s fishery management plan. The Division had previously closed coastal and joint fishing waters in North Carolina to both recreational and commercial spotted seatrout harvest on January 24 due to widespread cold stun events.

On Saturday, April 26, from 10 am to 1 pm, the Rodanthe-Waves-Salvo Civic Association (RWSCA) will host its third annual Earth Day Celebration at the Rodanthe-Waves-Salvo Community Building, 23646 NC Hwy 12 in Rodanthe (across from the Chicamacomico Lifesaving Station). Festivities will be held rain or shine. Check out the “Plant Swap” (take some/leave some) and pick up free native plants, including cardinal flowers, swamp milkweed, and more.
