Two candidates are running in the Democratic primary for the 8th Assembly District seat of the state Legislature in the Aug. 13 primary election. Incumbent Sylvia Ortiz-Velez faces challenger Enrique Murguia. There's no Republican candidate in the race so the primary winner will win the Nov. 5 general election. The 8th Assembly District includes neighborhoods south of downtown Milwaukee, with the Menomonee River as the northern boundary.

Two candidates are running in the Republican primary for the 20th Senate District seat of the state Legislature in the Aug. 13 primary election. Daniel Feyen, the incumbent in the 18th Senate District, faces Timothy Ramthun, a former state Assembly representative and 2022 candidate for governor. The winner will take on Democrat Michael Rapp in the Nov. 5 general election.

Tristan Hernandez MILWAUKEE — On the first day of the Republican National Convention in Wisconsin, former President Donald J. Trump said that he selected J.D. Vance LAW ’13 as his running mate. Trump made the announcement on his social media platform Truth Social. Vance, the junior Ohio senator elected in 2022, will join Trump in challenging President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris in November.
