METHODSIn the preclinical phase, cadaveric donor corneas were obtained from the National Disease Research Interchange. Later in the clinical phase, patient limbal biopsies were obtained (surgical details below). For primary (P0) cell culture, a 3 mm–by–3 mm biopsy was harvested from the limbus, and dissected limbal epithelial sheets were digested with Liberase MNP-S (Roche, Basel, Switzerland) and then dissociated into a single-cell suspension.
