WHO knows what it was that brought the star of The White Lotus, Aimee Lou Wood, to cry in a London street the other day. But many would hazard a guess that she was hurt and upset by the recent Saturday Night Live skit on US television, which mocked her large, protruding, gappy teeth. The irony, of course, is that the sketch wasn’t even funny. It was a lazy bit of supposed comedy writing which saw Sarah Sherman don giant prosthetic teeth, impersonating Wood in a skit.

I’VE long been judged on my appearance. Too fat in pregnancy, too thin after it. Earlier this year I would routinely get skinny shamed in the form of veiled comments on social media. Yes, I was far too skinny, but that was not deliberate. IF I had a pound for every man who has told me he’s really “into” older women, I’d have retired to the Maldives by now. They might say that, only to discover they find us hard to handle because we don’t submit or succumb like other women who are more eager to please. Those of us in our 50s are done with people-pleasing.  We’re so over it. We want someone who respects our strengths and embraces our vulnerabilities.
