Does the information that people see on social media influence their political views? Is it making people politically more divided? In July 2023, Science published three papers on an unprecedented study of the effects of social media and social media algorithms on political polarization during the United States 2020 presidential election.

The adoption of ChatGPT and related large language models to support research and generate scholarly content continues to accelerate. The policy for the Science family of journals has been that the use of these tools in research is acceptable as long as proper disclosure appears in the methods section. However, we initially took a very restrictive stance regarding the use of ChatGPT in preparing text and figures while monitoring thoughts and responses across the broad scientific community.
