DUBLIN CITY COUNCIL may soon launch an information campaign to encourage cyclists and pedestrians to “be sound” to each other on shared greenways. A report circulated to members of the council’s transport committee last week states that there is “ongoing concern” over how cyclists and walkers are interacting on the capital’s greenways – traffic-free paths often along canals and rivers.

RUSSIAN AND UKRAINIAN officials will meet in Istanbul today to exchange proposals on how to end the war, just one day after Ukraine struck dozens of Russian strategic bombers at airbases deep inside Russian territory. Prompted by US President Donald Trump, Moscow and Kyiv have resumed direct negotiations for the first time since the early months of Russia’s invasion. However, progress toward a peace agreement remains limited.

EIGHT PEOPLE WERE injured in the US state of Colorado yesterday when a man used a makeshift flamethrower to attack demonstrators as they demanded the release of Israeli hostages held in Gaza. The FBI called the assault a “targeted terror attack,” identifying the suspected perpetrator, who has been taken into custody, as 45-year-old Mohamed Sabry Soliman, but providing no further details about him.

CONSERVATIVE NATIONALIST KAROL Nawrocki has won Poland’s weekend presidential runoff election, according to the final vote count. Nawrocki won 50.89% of the votes in a very tight race against liberal Warsaw Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski, who received 49.11%. The close race had the country on edge since a first-round two weeks earlier and through the night into this morning, revealing deep divisions in the country along the eastern flank of NATO and the European Union.
