WESLACO, Texas (ValleyCentral) — An alligator was spotted in a sewer grate Tuesday evening. According to the Texas Department of Transportation, on Feb. 7 a construction inspector was visiting a site at FM 1015 and Camino de Verdad in Weslaco when a project contractor noticed the alligator in the storm drain. The Texas Game Warden Public Information Officer Calvin Atkinson was working with TxDOT and the City of Weslaco to possibly relocate the gator.

SANTA MARIA, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The Texas Department of Public Safety is investigating an ATV crash that left a man dead over the weekend. At approximately 9:11 p.m. on Saturday, DPS troopers responded to Bauer Road and FM 2556 in Santa Maria regarding an ATV crash. An investigation revealed the ATV, occupied by two men, was traveling westbound on a dirt road when the driver reportedly drove through a t-intersection, went airborne over a canal and crashed front first on the other side.

The event is part of a capstone project in which PSJA ISD students partnered with the PSJA Police Department and aims to raise awareness about the devastating consequences of drinking and driving. A mock crash scene was staged to provide a realistic portrayal of the tragic outcomes associated with drinking and driving.

At approximately 12:56 p.m. the Weslaco Police Department received a call from the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Department regarding a call from a student who stated they had a gun in their backpack and hung up, according to a release.

BROWNSVILLE, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Brownsville Public Utilities Board has shut off a leak from a main water line that was damaged on Wednesday night. Officials are waiting for the water to subside in the areas of E. Madison Street between E. 7th and E. 10th due to flooding from the leak. Electricity was also shut off on 8 city blocks as a precautionary measure. It has been restored. Brownsville police urge the public to use alternative routes and exercise caution in the area.
