SOME MIGHT call them old-fashioned, but I think that cheese balls deserve a comeback. At one time, you could find the herb- or pecan-covered mounds at every party you attended. Part of their allure is that until someone digs in, you never know what’s inside—it could be spreadable cheese, deviled ham, or some secret concoction closely guarded by the cook. Eventually, they fell out of fashion in favor of newfangled snacks, like whipped feta or baked brie.

IN THE SOUTH, we use the term “salad” quite liberally. But as a Southerner, I know to expect far more than lettuce when salad is on the menu.
