The day I discover I’ve been catfished, I walk into the local library because I don’t know where to put myself. I am bewildered. Wander among the books. A white police officer is talking to a Black security guard. On my way out, I hear him ask, “Do you want to file a criminal charge?” I don’t hear the answer. It’s teeming with rain as I walk up Bathurst Street, loud with cars. A bus splashes, and I jump out of the way. A man chuckles behind me, and I jump again, but this time a yell comes out.

It seems an eternity, but today marks the one-year anniversary of the cowardly Russian missile attack that killed the gifted writer and TFP friend Victoria Amelina. The Ukrainian poet, novelist, essayist, and documenter of Russian war crimes was mortally wounded on June 27, 2023, in an attack on a civilian target—a popular family restaurant—in Kramatorsk, Ukraine. The mother of a young son, Victoria hung on for five days before finally succumbing to her injuries on July 1. She was 37.

Ne m’oubliez pasThe first meat dishes at the home on Lepky were a sham. The Tsilyks don’t even have enough food for themselves. So I’ve had to get used to pearl barley, buckwheat, and pasta. Animal bones are first used for thin soup broth, and only after that do they come to me. I didn’t feel like hunting before—so now this is what I have. But I am here temporarily. I still believe I will return to Novers’k.
