The merger of Anglo-Australian law firm Herbert Smith Freehills and US outfit Kramer Levin was finalised yesterday (1 June), in a landmark tie-up that has created a top 20 global firm by revenue. The merged firm – known as Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer, or HSF Kramer for short – boasts global turnover of more than $2bn and a single profit pool. It has some 2,700 lawyers including around 630 partners based across 26 offices.

Dechert has hired a four-lawyer team from Orrick in London to boost its structured credit and collateralised loan obligation (CLO) offering. Partners Sushila Nayak and James Jirtle have joined the 165-lawyer office alongside two associates. Dechert said the hires underscored its commitment to being a market leader in the CLO and ABS space in both Europe and the US.

Eversheds Sutherland is set to launch a new Irish practice, following the end of merger talks between its existing Irish arm and leading Irish independent Willam Fry. Eversheds said today (29 May) that it plans to launch fully integrated operations in Ireland in September under its International LLP. The firm currently operates there as Eversheds Sutherland Ireland, an Irish partnership that is a member of Eversheds Sutherland Europe.

Kirkland & Ellis has added a trio of M&A partners in Boston including rainmaker Graham Robinson from Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom. Robinson, who was head of Skadden's Boston office, has joined the firm alongside fellow partners Laura Knoll and Chadé Severin. The trio advise primarily on public company M&A transactions with a focus on the biotech space and are joined by a team of around 15 associates.

K&L Gates has announced a new global managing partner and chair, as the top 25 US firm passes the baton to the next generation of leaders. Stacy Ackermann, head of the firm's finance practice, has been named global managing partner, effective on 1 July. Her appointment follows Jim Segerdahl’s decision not to seek a third term. Meanwhile, Rick Giovannelli has been appointed co-chair of the firm's management committee alongside current chair Michael Caccese.
