    Hanging baskets will decorate parts of Spalding town centre thanks to an £11,000 investment from a business group - prompting some concern from traders. Spalding Business Improvement District (BID) has agreed to fund the making up, watering, feeding and installation of 130 baskets around the town centre in its first major investment in the town since traders began to receive their bills in February.

    Police have closed three shops for selling illegal cigarettes and vapes. Two Spalding stores, EU Vapes and Spalding European, along with Holbeach’s Yellow Store will not be able to open until the summer following an operation by the Neighbourhood Policing Team. Sgt Callum Corder said, “In close collaboration with our partners, Lincolnshire County Council Trading Standards, we have again imposed closure orders, these shops have been involved in the sale of illegal tobacco products and vapes.

    The A17 is reported to be closed after a crash. It is shut between Holbeach and Moulton Seas End following the incident earlier today. AA Traffic is reporting that the A17 is closed in both directions from Peppermint roundabout and Common Road junction.     A town’s beacon blazed to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day. The Holbeach branch of the Royal Observer Corps Association ensured that the town’s beacon had been light on Thursday last week to commemorate this important anniversary. Entertainment had been provided on the beacon site, which sits between Wignal’s Gate and Spalding Road, on the evening. Association chairman Tony Topliss had praised member John Kinder for his role in organising the event.

    Union leaders have voiced ‘serious concerns’ about the £1.6 billion takeover of a food manufacturing giant. Unite the Union has spoken out over the possible merger of Greencore and Bakkavor to create a £4billion food business. Last month, Greencore agreed the takeover deal in principle with the Bakkavor board. Greencore are now reported to have agreed terms with Bakkavor, which has Europe’s largest chilled desserts factory in Newark as well as sites in Spalding and Holbeach.
