Trailblazing politician Dr. William “Fergie” Reid turns 100 years old on Tuesday, and his impact and influence is still felt across the state’s political scene. Reid became the first Black politician elected to the General Assembly since Reconstruction when he was voted to the House of Delegates in 1968, and was a co-founder of the Richmond Crusade for Voters.

Wendy Rake moved into a home on Patterson Avenue because she wanted her two twin boys to be able to walk and bike safely to and from school at Mary Munford Elementary. But since then, she said “there's just been a lot of accidents here that make me, as a parent, nervous,” including the accident that was just down the street from her home involving the beloved principal of her sons’ school, Greg Muzik.

Greg Muzik, the longtime principal of Mary Munford Elementary School, is in the hospital with what police described as life-threatening injuries on Tuesday night. Muzik was riding his bicycle when he was hit by a car from behind, throwing him from the bicycle. The accident occurred in the 4400 block of Patterson Avenue, near the school. An email sent by the school to parents confirmed the situation, but said no updates were available on Muzik's condition as of late Tuesday night.

Once upon a time, pharmacies were neighborhood institutions, places where prescriptions could be filled and medical advice dispensed by familiar faces. “There's no other health professional that a patient has as much access to than pharmacists,” said Shantelle Brown, founder and lead pharmacist at HOPE Pharmacy in Church Hill. But that situation is increasingly a relic of the past. Between 2011 and 2021, almost a third of U.S. pharmacies closed.

A historical link brought two mayors of identially named cities together on Thursday. Mayor Richard Pyne of Richmond, England and his wife, Helen, met with local Richmond Mayor Danny Avula in front of "the view that named Richmond" at Libby Hill. Pyne said his self-invited visit to the area was his first, but also the first of any Richmond, England mayor in 17 years. “I think that’s far too long,” he said.
