Early in January, President Biden signed into law the Social Security Fairness Act, which increases Social Security benefits for firefighters, cops, teachers, and other public employees in every community in the US, including New Braunfels and Comal County. This act abolishes the pension offset for public employees and passed in both the US House and Senate with bipartisan support.

News reports show the impact of our abortion ban. SB8, supported by our congressman Chip Roy, has led to a sharp increase in maternal and infant mortality. Roy is out of step with his constituents. Texans do not like where SB8 has led us: 70% to 80% think abortion should be available in some form. Simply put, more women and infants are dying since SB8. Maternal mortality in Texas went up a dramatic 56% from 2019-2022. Compare that to the national rate, which was an increase of 11%.

This school year opened with an all-too familiar tragedy: Two students and two teachers killed by a young, lone gunman in a high school in Winder, Georgia. One issue most Americans agree on is that gun violence must be addressed. Even many gun owners agree that protecting children is more important than owning a gun. Compromise is needed to solve this problem. Having more guns in schools is not the answer. A person with evil intent and a gun has the element of surprise.
