A Manatee County high school has launched a pilot program that provides flexibility for students facing different challenges, allowing them the opportunity to graduate on time. The extended-day program is for students who want to raise their GPA, make up classes or graduate early. It’s also for students who can’t get to school on time because they work or take care of younger siblings in the morning during the school’s normal start time.

The Bradenton Herald reported on similar complaints last April when residents of the Foxbrook subdivision in Parrish said heavy dust from a new housing community caused respiratory issues, poor driving conditions and expensive cleaning costs. After Manatee County government put new rules in place last year, the same problems remain, residents say.

A 90-year-old Lakewood Ranch man died after running a red light in Manatee County , troopers said. Just before 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, a 33-year-old Bradenton woman was driving an SUV east on State Road 70 toward the intersection with River Club Boulevard when the man drove through the red light and hit the SUV, the Florida Highway Patrol said. The man suffered serious injuries and later died at a hospital, troopers said. The woman was not hurt in the crash, according to a crash report.
