The months-long uncertainty around South Africa’s national lottery has finally been put to rest by Minister Parks Tau. Tau was given an ultimatum by the Pretoria High Court to announce a winning bid for the tender by 28 May, after it ruled the Minister’s plans to first introduce a 12-month transition license invalid.

Another Swedish charity lottery has been embroiled in controversy over improper marketing practices found by the gaming regulator, Spelinspektionen. Kombilotteriet, a subsidiary of A-lotterierna, which in turn is owned by the Swedish Democratic Youth Federation (SSU) and the Swedish Social Democratic Workers’ Party (SDWP), was indicted by Spelinspektionen over breaching consumer protection and telemarketing laws.

Scientific Games has been granted a lottery service supplier licence from the UAE’s General Commercial Gaming Regulatory Authority (GCGRA). The company joins the ranks of eight other suppliers licensed by the GCGRA, including Aristocrat, Novomatic, and IGT. Michael Conforti, President of International Business at Scientific Games, commented: “We are extremely pleased that Scientific Games has been authorized as a lottery supplier in the UAE with this license.

The Swedish gambling regulator, Spelinspektionen, has sanctioned two cancer charities with SEK 1m (£77k) over improper use of lottery promotions. According to the authority, both the Swedish Breast Cancer Association and the Swedish Prostate Cancer Association broke advertising regulations around telephone sales.

The Pretoria High Court has ordered Minister Parks Tau to appoint a permanent national lottery operator by 28 May. This follows a national lottery limbo which began earlier this year, when it was revealed that Minister Parks Tau will grant a temporary 12-month lottery license instead of the full eight-year one in order to create a buffer between the license transition.
