AbstractTranscriptional signaling during hypoxic stress is primarily governed by hypoxia-inducible transcription factors (HIFs), which bind to hypoxia response elements (HREs) in gene regulatory regions. However, only a small proportion (~1%) of known HREs are occupied by HIFs during hypoxia, suggesting the involvement of additional pathways.

1. IntroductionObesity is associated with insulin resistance (IR), and this represents a major risk factor for metabolic syndrome (MetS), type 2 diabetes (T2D), and cardiovascular disorders such as coronary artery disease and heart failure [1,2]. It has been demonstrated that mitochondrial dysfunction contributes to obesity-related IR [3,4,5]. Previously, we and others showed that bariatric surgery rapidly improves mitochondrial respiration in morbidly obese patients [6,7].
