A portion of the Cascade River is now open seven days a week to fishing for hatchery spring Chinook salmon through July 15. According to a state Department of Fish and Wildlife news release, the Cascade River is open from the mouth to the Rockport-Cascade Road Bridge. The area from the upstream side of the Rockport-Cascade Road Bridge to 300 feet upstream is now closed.

The Anacortes High School baseball team's bats fell silent Saturday, May 31, at the worst possible time. In the Class 2A State Tournament title game at Joe Martin Stadium in Bellingham, the top-seeded Seahawks fell 3-0 after being no-hit by second-seeded Bainbridge Island. The Spartans scored a run in the second inning and two in the sixth. The Seahawks (23-5) had their 22-game win streak snapped. "This is the toughest loss," Anacortes coach Patt Swapp said.

TACOMA - Anacortes High School junior Dylan Rowell won a title Thursday at the Class 2A State Track and Field Championships. He won the boys' 1,600-meter race in 4 minutes, 10.90 seconds at Mount Tahoma High School. The time was Rowell's fastest of his high school career, bettering his previous mark of 4:13.14, and was 0.28 of a second off Parker Mong's 2024 school record. Mystic Hammond of Ellensburg finished second in 4:14.58. Rowell finished fifth in the race a year ago.
