    A second jury has deadlocked in the trial of Alexander Vanags after three days of deliberation in Whatcom County Superior Court, leading to a mistrial. Vanags, 35, of Arlington, killed his friend, 28-year-old Mark Stebakov, on April 13, 2019 while the two were camping at Baker Lake and on psychedelic drugs. According to prosecutors, Vanags intentionally caused Stebakov’s death when he slashed him at least 14 times with a machete while the two were on LSD.

    Some manufactured homes will be eligible for the same low-cost mortgages as their site-built counterparts under a bill signed into law by Washington Gov. Bob Ferguson. The governor signed Engrossed House Bill 1191 at a ceremony Friday after it was passed unanimously by lawmakers in both chambers — 97-0 in the House and 49-0 in the Senate. The unanimous support is a coup for State Rep. April Connors, R-Tri-Cities, its primary sponsor.

    The Northwest Washington Fair will return to Lynden from Aug. 7-16 with another year of entertainment and concerts at its Grandstand Arena. The fair has already announced live concerts by American country singer Jake Owen, Chandler Moore, a Grammy-winning Christian music singer and part of Maverick City Music, and iconic rock group ZZ Top. Fair officials recently announced another entertainment option that is very familiar to the area and fair arena: The Lynden PRCA Rodeo.
