The race for Governor of New Mexico has another contender. Bernalillo County District Attorney Sam Bregman has formally announced his candidacy to be the Democratic nominee for governor. Bregman has been an attorney in New Mexico for decades and was appointed Bernalillo County District Attorney in 2023 by current governor Michelle Lujan Grisham.

Governor, just last week *** teenage suspect was killed after police say he committed *** crime with about 6 or 7 other teenagers. What is the biggest issue in trying to address juvenile crime and how are you working with lawmakers to try and stop this? Well, I've been trying to work with lawmakers to stop sort of choosing one piece of this to nibble at since 2019. You have to address it all the time for all populations and age groups, every single session.

The New Mexico Department of Health has announced measles has spread to a third county in New Mexico. The health department says an unvaccinated child in Chaves County has been diagnosed with measles. The total number of measles cases in New Mexico has risen to 56. Health officials say vaccination rates in the state are rising as well. From February 1 through April 3, there have been 3,269 people in southeast New Mexico who have received the MMR vaccine.

Chaves County sheriff's deputies are investigating after an inmate died while in custody. According to the Chaves County Sheriff's Office, deputies were dispatched to the county detention center to assist in a medical situation. Detention center staff told dispatchers that CPR had started on an inmate. Sheriff's officials say a 48-year-old inmate was taken to Eastern New Mexico Medical Center in serious condition. That inmate later died. No further information about the death has been released.
