There is a popular meme on the Internet - the ‘never give up’ cartoon, it’s called - which shows two men mining underground for diamonds. The first one is eagerly digging away. The second one has made more progress but is exhausted. He’s done. He’s walking away dejected, unaware at how close he had come to breaking through and reaching his goal. The point is about perseverance.

In the middle of practically nowhere - six hours’ drive west of Sydney, five hours’ drive north of Melbourne - lies the best-kept secret in Australian soccer. Maybe Australian sport. Griffith, NSW, is a place that shouldn’t exist. Without irrigation, it would be a desert - dry, flat, and empty.

Aziz Behich’s first international goal in 13 years has all but guaranteed the Socceroos a spot at the 2026 World Cup, scoring in the dying moments on Thursday night to secure a gritty 1-0 win over Japan. A scoreless draw looked to be on the cards after a largely unsatisfying performance from Tony Popovic’s side, who were comprehensively outplayed by the Samurai Blue.

Oh thank god that this has finally been confirmed so I can sleep again

Lock it in 🕝 The 2025 Toyota AFL Grand Final will start at the traditional time: https://t.co/H52mOnbbu7 https://t.co/YpJ1ugeqxO

This is why I like the Club World Cup conceptually. These sort of clubs deserve an opportunity to compete with the big dogs in Europe for something meaningful. It will be the highlight of so many people’s lives and careers.

One of the worst things about modern football is the way being a fan has become a competition. Imagine policing other people’s emotions like this. The name-calling just not necessary. Not difficult to be normal about these things, you don’t have to say something about everything.

Ange's widows on this app are starting to become insufferable. Because we won an EL with him they're acting like we can't win anything anymore. Acting like we didn't lose 22 games out of 38 being the worst version of Tottenham I've ever seen for 80% of the season.
