We now know who’s going to the Super Bowl this season. And, for the 59th year, it won’t be the Detroit Lions. For more than two weeks, a post about the Lions, No. 1 seed in the NFC playoffs and my hometown team, bounced around in my head. How the Lions offense was firing on all cylinders, how the defense was recovering from catastrophic injury, how not only had they advanced to become the top seed, they shed their identity as lovable losers to become favorites. Sentimental favorites even.

As a news consumer, I usually come to a story as a blank slate: Maybe a little background knowledge, but rarely firsthand experience. But this campaign season, the tables turned as good family friends in Nebraska built a grass-roots movement into taking advantage of the state’s rules for allocating into electoral votes by congressional districts and ensuring that Omaha and the Second Congressional District was a “blue dot” in normally dyed-red Nebraska.

It’s been a minute between posts, so just a few words to let you know I’m still pecking away here. (You do know that October and November were pretty chock full o’news?) Call it a notebook dump:I’ve been puzzling a while for a way to recharge this space, and over some postelection time off, I had an idea for a post based on an interview. While it’s not necessarily reporting, the talking is done and the percolating has begun. I hope to have something put together next week.

We grew up playing cards, and our boys now have caught the fever. And for something this summer nondigital that has them using their minds, we are happy to oblige. It was a quiet moment in the church pew on Sunday. The pastor had just started his homily, a meditation on Christ the Good Shepherd, one that involved a previous post-Easter Sunday at home, after Mass, listening to classical music. What popped on but Bach’s “Sheep May Safely Graze.” Our pastor positively waxed about feeling transformed with the aura of a job well done.

The Renaissance Center in downtown Detroit, along the Detroit River. Via Ken Lund and Wikimedia Commons. The landscape of my childhood is disappearing. Has disappeared, actually. Earlier this month, two huge smokestacks about 2 miles away from my childhood home were demolished. They joined the smaller stacks felled at some unremembered time.

I turned 51 on Saturday. Or, as I put it, it was the 30th anniversary of my 21st birthday. 2024 also marks 30 years since I graduated college and 20 years since I moved to Minneapolis. All those round numbers already had me thinking back, not to mention the success of my hometown football team, the Detroit Lions, triggering memories of their last high mark: The 1991 season, which sent them to the NFC Championship Game.

At first, the account here was just for reading others’ posts and getting them emailed to me. I might have started that way on Twitter. But before long, the blank box started calling. So let me lay out what I’m not doing here: Journalism or paywalls, at least not yet. I’ve been behind the scenes in regional journalism for 30 years now, but other that a year as a night cops reporter, I’ve barely written. Coming out of my campus work, I had a fairly robust set of writing skills developed.
