    Katie Thornton fell in love with radio in her childhood bedroom in Minneapolis, listening to her friends on Radio K's show for high school and junior high students. Season 1, focused on conservative talk radio and the rise of a media company that embraced the format, won a Peabody Award, one of the highest awards for storytelling by electronic media. Season 2, looking at shortwave radio and how it's been co-opted by different interests, just wrapped up at the end of May.

    We now know who’s going to the Super Bowl this season. And, for the 59th year, it won’t be the Detroit Lions. For more than two weeks, a post about the Lions, No. 1 seed in the NFC playoffs and my hometown team, bounced around in my head. How the Lions offense was firing on all cylinders, how the defense was recovering from catastrophic injury, how not only had they advanced to become the top seed, they shed their identity as lovable losers to become favorites. Sentimental favorites even.

    As a news consumer, I usually come to a story as a blank slate: Maybe a little background knowledge, but rarely firsthand experience. But this campaign season, the tables turned as good family friends in Nebraska built a grass-roots movement into taking advantage of the state’s rules for allocating into electoral votes by congressional districts and ensuring that Omaha and the Second Congressional District was a “blue dot” in normally dyed-red Nebraska.
