“My family and all the other families deserve closure,” Cambria Harris said in a Globe and Mail article. These were heartfelt words from one of the young women at the front of the battle to bring her mom home from a Winnipeg-area landfill. Morgan Harris is one of the women believed to be in the Prairie Green landfill. Cambria Harris, her daughter, has been one of the family members fighting to bring their loved ones home.

Two months ago, I saw the post on Facebook about a missing woman. The name was vaguely familiar, and she was from my hometown, Kenora. I waited a couple of days before sharing the post on my page. She was still missing and there was no information about where in Winnipeg she might be. Then I got a message from my cousin, Karen. The missing woman was a family member: the mother of Karen’s grandson. She had come to the city by bus and then disappeared, with no contact with friends or family for a week.

There was no possibility of meeting in person that day. The pandemic had brought with it risks so new, and an uncertainty so deep, that gathering the lectio divina group in the same room was now out of the question. Most amateur guitar players will chuckle at this comment made by Ray Mitchell (played by Alberta country singer-songwriter Corb Lund) to his 15-year-old guitar student, Leland Parenteau (played by Kaden Noskiye) in Guitar Lessons. It’s true: you can play a lot of songs if you know these chords. At the end of the movie, when Leland mastered the three chords, Ray says, “Then you’re set for life. Johnny Cash forever.”Guitar Lessons is an independent, locally produced (High Level, Alberta) movie.

This poem is the experience of Vivian Ketchum, a Winnipeg-based residential school survivor and writer. In January 2023, the community of Wauzhushk Onigum Nation in northwestern Ontario confirmed the discovery of evidence of 170 "plausible burials" at a former residential school site, following a round of ground-penetrating radar searches that detected the anomalies. It was same residential school that Vivian Ketchum's late mother (and several other relatives) once attended.
