INTRODUCTION Extreme climatic conditions represent a significant challenge for forest communities, as trees are forced to grow under conditions that may not be suitable for their physiology. In particular, an increased drought intensity is affecting forest ecosystems worldwide (Cook et al., 2018; Corlett, 2016; González-M. et al., 2021; Hartmann et al., 2022), increasing the urgency of understanding tree drought-driven responses (Kimball et al., 2016).
