AbstractAmazonia’s floodplain system is the largest and most biodiverse on Earth. Although forests are crucial to the ecological integrity of floodplains, our understanding of their species composition and how this may differ from surrounding forest types is still far too limited, particularly as changing inundation regimes begin to reshape floodplain tree communities and the critical ecosystem functions they underpin.

INTRODUCTION Extreme climatic conditions represent a significant challenge for forest communities, as trees are forced to grow under conditions that may not be suitable for their physiology. In particular, an increased drought intensity is affecting forest ecosystems worldwide (Cook et al., 2018; Corlett, 2016; González-M. et al., 2021; Hartmann et al., 2022), increasing the urgency of understanding tree drought-driven responses (Kimball et al., 2016).
