Vectors can be the ultimate vehicle for transporting material into cells. Except when they’re not so ultimate. Vectors can surprise in good and, sometimes, bad ways. These tools, which can be modified viruses, are in broad use in life science labs. They ferry materials into cells, which may be DNA fragments, genes or in the case of CRISPR, components such as a guide RNA and a Cas enzyme.

Since he started his lab nearly 15 years ago, Stanford University geneticist and RNA biologist Jin Billy Li has been exploring an endogenous process in metazoan cells called RNA editing, along with ways to harness it to target and manipulate RNAs inside human cells.
