This July 2024 issue of the Japanese fashion magazine ‘Men’s Fudge’ (メンズファッジ) is a special feature on the apparel of the characters from Taiyo Matsumoto’s manga universe, from PingPong, Tekkon Kinkreet to Tokyo Higoro. The cover itself is a very stylish illustration painted by the artist himself. I know absolutely nothing about fashion and also have zero fashion sense, so I’m not sure if the apparel featured in the magazine are indeed stylish or not.

I’ve been a big fan of British fashion photography Tim Walker ever since I discovered his work through his big hardcover pictorial ‘Pictures’, which I reviewed way back in 2012. I’m particularly impressed by the meticulous work he puts into the elaborate set dressing of his shoots, all carefully art directed to tell fascinating stories through arresting images.

Buichi Terasawa (寺沢武一 1955 – 2023) was a Japanese manga artist, most well known for his comic titles like Goku Midnight Eye, Cobra and TAKERU, the latter reportedly been the first digitally colored manga ever released. Cobra was apparently a very big hit especially in France, with The Fifth Element director Luc Besson been a big fan.

Hot on the heels of the Nausicaa and Castle In The Sky imageboard books come the biggest ( by page count ) in the series yet for Studio Ghibli’s most emblematic animated film, My Neighbor Totoro. At 176 pages, this sumptuous large format book packs in plenty of delightful concept art ( referred to as imageboards/イメージボード in the Japanese animation industry ) from the beloved movie, covering character designs for Satsuki and Mei, the Totoro and catbus as well as plenty of environmental designs.

Real pity the film didn't snag the Oscars that year for best #vfx. @ILMVFX really cooked something spectacular that cinema has never seen before. Good vfx is already hard to make, but groundbreaking vfx is yet harder.
