A near miss. That’s what the Floyd Central Lady Highlanders' 3,200-meter relay team had at this year’s girls' state track and field finals at North Central High School in Indianapolis on June 7 on a warm, Saturday afternoon despite four personal bests by Emma Campbell, Bella Milliner, Noel Nifong and Adeline Shultz. Athletes from 68 schools met on June 6 for the boys' state track and field finals at North Central High School in Indianapolis and, for some, it was a great day with medals being put around their necks. The Highlanders didn’t win by one.

Following a 1-1/2-hour delay for lightning and rain from a thunderstorm, the Floyd Central Lady Highlanders dominated the girls' track sectional last Tuesday night with a 76-point win over runner-up Corydon Central. Several sectional records fell during the meet despite the wait for Mother Nature to dry up the sky. Overall, it was a strong night for the athletes who were all bidding for a spot to this week’s Evansville Central regional.
