By Walter Sprague, NLJ Photojournalist During last Thursday’s commissioner meeting, when given the opportunity to discuss the uncounted votes in our general election, I became concerned about the way the public was treated, and that feeling didn’t get any better after the canvassing board meeting the following day. It seemed evident to me that far too many public officials feel the public is somehow less important to our system of self-government than the public officials themselves.

By Walter Sprague, NLJ Reporter Significant savings are in store for the city of Newcastle on patching existing paved roads due to the purchase of a new piece of machinery last year. The City Council approved the purchase of a new asphalt recycler on May 15, 2023, and the purchase and payment were made on June 5, 2023, for about $110,000.

About 9:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 30, a small sedan ran through the intersection at the Port of Entry in Newcastle at an apparently high rate of speed, then crashed into two businesses at 1903 W. Main St. The impact took out the front walls of two local businesses — Treasured Floral and Seven Painted Ladies — and both businesses appear to be destroyed, but losses have reportedly not been determined by the respective insurance companies at this time.
