However, it is unknown if Gov. Ferguson will sign the operating budget, veto it, or partially veto it. The main focus of the session was how to respond to the budget shortfall.

This past week, committees focused on hearing bills passed by the opposite chamber. The next deadline is April 2 when all bills must pass out of their policy committee. Legislators have shifted to budget mode.

With the deadline to pass bills out of their house of origin fast approaching, legislators have been focused this past week on floor action, debating, and voting on bills. The house of origin cutoff is 5 p.m. on March 12. Bills that do not meet this deadline are considered dead and ineligible to move forward this year unless considered Necessary to Implement the Budget (NTIB).

The focus of the past week was on fiscal and transportation committees working late into the night hearing hundreds of bills with fiscal impacts and holding executive session to pass out bills. Friday, Feb. 28th also marked the second major deadline of the legislative session — fiscal cutoff.

Oct. 15 marked my six-month anniversary with the Washington Association of Wheat Growers (WAWG) team. Thank you to those growers that have reached out to me recently with recommendations of practices that I pass on to our state Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) team. There have been some fantastic recommendations, and I sincerely appreciate the time and energy that goes into these submissions.

Sitting down to write my last President’s Perspective, I suddenly realized how fast this year has gone by. When I took the role as president last November, I was a little overwhelmed to be in such an important leadership position for the wheat industry. There were many challenges we faced in 2024, but the Washington Association of Wheat Growers (WAWG) team was there, working tirelessly and taking valuable time away from the farm to fight and lobby for the good of wheat.

Well, here we are in October, and we still don’t have a new farm bill, but that’s not for lack of effort from the U.S. agricultural industry. Last month, myself and WAWG past presidents, Andy Juris and Nicole Berg, flew into Washington, D.C., to take part in a National Association of Wheat Growers (NAWG) farm bill fly-in. It just so happened that we are all Horse Heaven Hills farmers, but we were representing all Eastern Washington wheat growers.

I love wheat farming, but when I’m having a bad day, there’s a lot not to love, too. I don’t think of myself as a successful wheat farmer, but I guess I am if I’m still running the farm operation. I know it takes a lot of hard work, discussions, planning, and determination. It also takes more than just me to be a so-called successful farmer, one who is able to weather the tough years (and we all have them).
