The program is now providing a path to homeownership for Samantha Leacock after years of challenges.

    Progressive think tank Carolina Forward proposed a “Middle-Class Housing Plan” featuring an innovative state-backed loan program to address North Carolina’s housing crisis. The plan suggests the state secure 75% of housing development loans, reducing financial risks for investors and developers.  Theo Nollert of Carolina Forward explained the loan mechanism would function similarly to Small Business Administration loans, with an exceptionally low default rate of about 1-2%.

    New research shows homeownership is becoming harder to achieve in the Charlotte region due to a lack of supply, which is driving up prices and interest rates. UNC Charlotte’s Childress Klein Center for Real Estate has released its annual “State of Housing” report. Yongqiang Chu, the lead researcher, said during a presentation on Wednesday the market has stabilized since the pandemic, but prices are still increasing due to demand.

    WCNC reports one person was killed during an armed robbery of a Loomis Fargo armored truck in Kings Mountain on Wednesday. The incident occurred a few minutes before 9 a.m. at a pharmacy along East King Street in Kings Mountain. Chief Gerald Childress said the victim was shot multiple times and died at the scene. The case is being investigated as an armed robbery homicide. "He was attempting to service the ATM when this incident took place," Childress said.

    Mecklenburg County data shows more than 3,000 people don’t have a home right now and 37% of those people have young children. There are services in the county to help, but the waitlist for affordable housing is in the tens of thousands. One resource available is the nonprofit Heal Charlotte. The group has turned a Sugar Creek hotel into a place of refuge for families who have fallen on hard times.
