Two female rabbis who’ve cared for their synagogue communities through good times and bad, including the pandemic and antisemitism, are retiring after more than 30 years of combined service. Rabbi Jennifer Jaech of Temple Israel of Northern Westchester in Croton, and Rabbi Dana Bogatz of First Hebrew Congregation in Peekskill, are leaving their synagogues in June. The two, who are friends and share a love of horse-back-riding, are relocating near family out of state.

Surreal artist Steven Kenny likes to surprise people, from painting a woman with animals living in her hair, and a summer beach scene on an iceberg with a penguin, to a child casually sitting on a lava flow with a smokestack in his hat. The Peekskill High School (PHS) 1980 graduate has creatively mastered the art of the unexpected. Displaying his artwork for the past 40 years at dozens of galleries around the world, Kenny is widely known for both his paintings and illustrations.

When Kyle and Kristin Gurley relocated from Sunnyvale during the pandemic, they wanted a more laid-back lifestyle and a community with the highest standards of medical care. Their decision to choose Monterey was based, in part, on the care that Stanford Medicine Children’s Health could provide to their daughter, Mia, especially at its local pediatric clinic. Turns out, they say, their decision was wise.

Nuestro Casa para Todos—which means “Our House for All”—is a new ELCA ministry serving students and neighbors of the University of Puerto Rico in Río Piedras. In March 2023, Nuestro Casa para Todos began worship services for the community. In September of that year, it launched a ministry to accompany and serve the university community. The Caribbean Synod tried to do something new by renovating a former church building that sat empty near the campus.
