ABSTRACTObjectives: The question of what providers one has access to under their insurance coverage is crucial for patients in managed care. This study sought to examine information displayed in online provider directories and whether this information matched consumer preferences. Study Design: A national survey (N = 4007) paired with an analysis of online provider network directories. Methods: We conducted a quantitative content analysis of online provider directories from March 1 to May 30, 2023.

ABSTRACTObjectives: Most Americans have insurance that uses managed care arrangements. Regulators have long sought to ensure access to care through network adequacy regulations. However, consumers have largely been excluded from conversations about network adequacy. To our knowledge, our study is the first to assess consumer preferences for various definitions of network adequacy including those aimed at supporting health equity and reducing disparities.

What is known on this topic Treatment for substance use disorders is underutilized, even for those with commercial health insurance. Rural areas have additional barriers to accessing care, including limited networks of healthcare providers who contract with commercial insurance. What this study adds Individuals with substance use disorders in rural areas receive initial and ongoing treatment less often than their urban counterparts.

In Reply In our recent Research Letter,1 we found that the number of chronic conditions was not associated with disenrollment from MA to FFS or from FFS to MA between 2010 and 2019. Dr Burke uses our study findings to discuss the MA program as a whole and raises concern that some individuals may not completely understand MA plans’ utilization management tools and subsequently find it difficult to switch to FFS because they cannot find a generous Medigap policy at an affordable price.
