I'm the first journalist in the world who's laid hands on the new sci-fi strategy game from the studio behind Hardspace: Shipbreaker and Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak, and I've just broken it to pieces in front of them. I'm having a great time. Every time I preview a game that has unfinished art and narrative dead-ends scattered around like landmines, there's the potential for an awkward moment where the game flat-out breaks.

Nine months since launch, Warhammer 40K: Darktide sits on Steam with a "Mixed" review score, both in recent and all-time reviews. There were more than a few criticisms of Darktide at launch—the unfinished crafting system, the cosmetics store, crashes and performance issues—but one of the most common and consistent I've seen is that Darktide has only four character classes, compared to its predecessor Vermintide 2's five characters (with multiple subclasses apiece).

In that same span of time, a megalomaniac has sent Twitter into a shitspiral and the brainiacs in charge of Reddit have managed to alienate the most dedicated members of many of their subcommunities.

With nothing but steely, jet-fuel-proof force of will, I’ve resisted the temptation to turn Read Only Memo into a Baldur’s Gate 3 newsletter. This was no easy feat: as I write this Saturday night, Baldur’s Gate 3 has been the bestselling game on Steam for a week and change, practically everyone I know is playing it even if they don’t normally give a lick about CRPGs, and I would be playing it every waking moment if I wasn’t patiently waiting to experience it alongside my co-op crew.

Baldur's Gate 3 is a flexible game: with low settings it's possible to run on the Steam Deck, while cranked up to ultra it looks quite nice on a powerful desktop without gobbling up every last megabyte of VRAM your graphics card can spare. On my RTX 3070-equipped PC I'm running it on ultra settings with a 120 fps framerate cap, and using DLSS to ensure my game runs smoothly above 60 fps even when spells start popping off in battle.
