A World War II veteran received a special round of applause at a memorial service to honour the lives of those who served their country more than 80 years ago. It was a momentous day on May 8 1945 when the first ever VE Day was celebrated. People spilled out into the streets as outdoor parties were held, and boats decorated with flags and bunting sailed triumphantly down the River Mersey in front of cheering crowds.
