In July 2024 Norway’s Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace signed a contract with the Norwegian Defence Materiel Agency (NDMA) for the development of a next-generation ‘supersonic strike missile’, as part of a collaborative project between Norway and Germany first announced in November 2023. The plan is for the new manoeuvrable naval strike missile, dubbed the Tyrfing, to be operational in 2035.

On 5 December 2024, SIPRI’s Director and leading experts participated in the World Emerging Security Forum (WESF) in Seoul, an annual event aimed at shaping global discussions on ways to effectively tackle emerging security threats. Dan Smith, Dr Wilfred Wan and Dr Jingdong Yuan took part in discussions on the interplay of geopolitics and emerging technologies, and the growing competition for resources for technological development.

On 11 December 2024, two leading SIPRI experts will take part in a panel on nuclear weapons organized by the Nobel Peace Prize. Dr Wilfred Wan, Director of SIPRI’s Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) Programme, and Hans M. Kristensen, Associate Senior Fellow in SIPRI’s WMD Programme and Director of the Nuclear Information Project at the Federation of American Scientists, will participate in the panel ‘NUKES—How to counter the threat’ during the Nobel Peace Prize Forum.
